General

Will EMP install my system?

For a reasonable price, EMP will have an experienced professional come and install the equipment for you. However, as our client, you also have the option of installing the system yourself while we provide help over-the-phone as needed.

How do I get help?

We are open Monday to Friday 8:00 AM (EST) to 6:00 PM (EST), where we can be reached at 631-434-3700. Please have the type of system, serial number and information concerning the steps you have taken to correct the problem.

Also, each EMP manual includes a troubleshooting guide to help fix typical problems. If the manual is unable to help, then we'd be more than happy to help solve your problem.

What type of training does EMP provide?

We are willing to provide however much training you need to feel comfortable operating our system. We can travel to your factory and train your operators, or we will ship the unit to you and provide assistance over the phone.

We are happy with our old EMP equipment. Must we change?

EMP products are built to last! We continue to provide service on some equipment that has been in the field for over 60 years. As long as we can get or make the parts we will continue to do so.

Does EMP offer systems other than the Servo Registration System?

Depending upon your registration needs, you may prefer to not use a Servo system. In that case, we still offer the Model 200/250 System as a low-cost, low-speed solution. We began selling the Model 200 and 250 in 1986 and continue to repair and install these systems to this day.

What's the deal with registration marks?

The Registration Mark is the reference that tells the EMP System the printed web's exact position. It is important that the Registration Mark have the following characteristics:

1. Color - Since the scanner "sees" the mark by sensing the change in colors, contrast is the key. High contrast (Dark color on light or vice versa) provides the best signal ratio and control reliability Therefore, if possible, plan early to use bright, well defined, contrasting colors in your operation.

2. Size - EMP recommends the mark to be a minimum of 3/8" in length and 1/8" wide. This size is recommended because the 3/8" length allows for slight side to side web drift while still remaining in the path of the scanner. The width of 1/8" provides the scanner enough contrast.

Note: If you are using a foil or shiny web we recommend mounting the scanner laterally at 15°.

3. For servo systems, we require 20° print-free clear area before the mark. For older systems, we require a 30° print-free clear area before and after the mark.

Servo Registration Systems

How do I mount the system to my machine?

We recommend you purchase our brackets to ensure proper installation of your system. However, if you operate a machine shop and feel comfortable developing your own, we will gladly provide any dimensions and advice necessary to design them inhouse.

Who will program my Servo Registration Control system?

All EMP products arrive at your door fully programmed and ready to be set-up. Every program in every system we ship out is tailored to your application and machine so it operates optimally.

On rare occasion, software upgrades may be necessary. With our Series 1100XP, we are able to access your system remotely, thanks to the systems ethernet capabilities, and we can remotely upgrade your software for you.

I installed your Servo System on my Trine Roll-Fed Labeler. Now my first label is always 1/2" Off. What the heck is going on?

Good question! When installing our Series 1100 Servo Registration System on your Trine Roll-Fed Labeler, you may notice some differences in the timing of the infeed. To resolve this issue, you need to adjust the settings in your PLS. If your PLS is still factory set, you will have a value of 180 in the Channel 3 setting for On.

Change that value to 192 and you should begin getting accurate cuts on the first label. Thanks!

Motor Registration Systems

Who will setup my Model 200 or 250 Registration Control System?

Electro-mechanical systems are “registered” on site to ensure an optimal operation. We do our best to provide manuals and over-the-phone support to enable our customers to install their Model 200 or 250 on their own. However, for a reasonable commissioning fee we will also travel to your plant to ensure proper set-up and operation.

Can my Model 2 be repaired?

Yes! Even though we launched the Model 2 almost 40 years ago, we still continue to repair them for our customers. The line has since been discontinued and is no longer available for sale, but if you send it in we will do our best to repair it for you at a low cost.

Differentials & Transmissions

How do I know what type of differential I need to run my electro-mechanical system?

EMP provides a full selection of custom differentials and transmissions. Please call us to discuss the options available.

My web length keeps changing drastically, what should I do?

For transmission-based systems, this is most likely being caused by a faulty Zero-Max variator. The Zero-Max controls the length of the web through the transmission, when it is not operating properly, the length can result in significant changes.

We also find that occcassionally this is due to a faulty printing job. Measure several units of your web to ensure the distance between marks is correct. If they are not correct, our sequencing feature may be able to help you keep running.

If you are operating a Servo system, we recommend checking the draw roller to make sure it is tightly engaged.
